Durban -

One man died and another was wounded on Friday when a group of men exchange gunfire with police in Asherville, Durban.

Five men in a car opened fire on a police patrol which approached them as they sat in a car parked on Nerina Road at 1.30pm, Captain Thulani Zwane said in a statement.

One of five was killed when he fell off a nearby cliff while shooting at the police. Police shot a second man in the foot and arrested him. Both men had unlicensed handguns.

The other three were also arrested while trying to run away. Another two unlicensed pistols were found in their possession.

They would appear in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court soon on charges of attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, and ammunition. - Sapa
