MEC Willies Mchunu said the arrest of the councillor, who could not be named until he appeared in court on Wednesday, proved that nobody was above the law.
He said the councillor was arrested at the KwaMashu hostel on Monday.
“According to the police, an unlicensed firearm was recovered in his house and police are investigating a possible link (to) other crimes committed in the area,” Mchunu said in a statement.
He called for calm after the arrest.
“The area of KwaMashu has been experiencing serious political instability in the recent past. Therefore, we urge everyone, including political parties, to work with the police and government to restore order in this area,” he said.
