|||Durban - Pinetown deliveryman Felix Mncwango bears such an uncanny likeness to Julius Malema that he often draws curious stares – and the odd request for money or help with tenders.
Not that it matters for 37-year-old Mncwango, of Emagwinyeni near Klaarwater, as he is probably the former ANC Youth League leader’s biggest fan.
Not batting an eyelid despite frantic whispering and finger-pointing is a skill he has mastered, although he insists he cannot see any resemblance to his idol.
“
I don’t mind because I know I don’t look like him. I look like my family,” said Mncwango.
He said he accepted people drawing a likeness as a compliment.
A self-confessed fan of Malema, Mncwango spoke of his admiration for the former ANCYL frontman.
“I love and support him 100 percent,” he said.
“Why would you not like someone who speaks the truth?
“It’s a pity I don’t have money because if I did I would personalise the licence plate of my car with ‘100% support 4 Malema’.”
Malema was a born leader despite his much-publicised discipline problems, which could be resolved through some guidance, said Mncwango.
On Malema’s recent financial problems that have led to his assets being seized and auctioned to repay a R16 million debt to Sars, Mncwango offered his sympathy. He was confident it was a temporary setback.
“When a man falls he is not necessarily down and out. He will bounce back from this and maybe even reclaim his position,” he said.
Surprisingly, given Mncwango’s uncanny resemblance to his idol, including his wide smile,he has not received any special treatment.
Instead, people approach him with requests for money, advice on tenders, and even help getting to the front of the queue at the local clinic, he said.
“I am a delivery guy looking to make some money myself, so I always laugh when people ask me for tenders,” said Mncwango.
He said he had not had any negative reactions to his appearance.
