Durban - Two women were shot dead on New Year's day in the Badlane area in Eshowe, the KwaZulu-Natal safety department said on Friday.

Spokesman Kwanele Ncalane said a group of men entered the women's homestead at exactly midnight and randomly opened fire.

“Three women aged (between) 21 and 30 were shot. Two died and the third one is still in hospital,” said Ncalane.

The motive for the killing was unknown.

Police were investigating two murder charges and one attempted murder charge.

KwaZulu-Natal community safety MEC Willies Mchunu on Friday condemned the incident. He urged community members to allow police to investigate the matter without any interference.

“We condemn this incident in the strongest possible terms,” he said.

“The police will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that those who committed this dastardly deed face the full might of the law.”

Mchunu extended condolences to the families of the two women. - Sapa
