Durban - A KwaZulu-Natal man has been arrested in connection with the murders of his niece and nephew in Madlankala, Esikhawini, police said on Thursday.

The bodies were discovered by the three-year-old girl's father who was searching for the missing children near their home, while the rest of the family had gone to file a missing person's case for both children, Captain Thulani Zwane said.

“The father... noticed the newly dug sand in the half-built rondavel. The police were called again and they found two dead bodies buried in the shallow grave.”

Police found blood stains in the 35-year-old's room, a traditional bowl called ukhamba with traditional medicine inside it, and a knife they allege was used to kill the nine-year-old boy.

Police believe the girl was strangled.

The man was left to care for the boy and a baby on Wednesday afternoon while family members went searching for the girl, who had gone missing.

Upon their return, they found the boy was also missing.

When the uncle failed to tell them were the boy was, the family called the police.

The man is expected to appear in the Esikhawini Magistrate court soon on two murder charges, Zwane said.

The baby was with the family.
