In an interview with The Mercury’s sister newspaper Isolezwe, he denied the allegation.
Mdunge has resigned, a move viewed by some as his way of evading an internal investigation. He denies this.
Provincial police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said: “I was filled with a deep sense of disbelief and disappointment when I learnt of the allegation.”
Ngobeni said she was duty-bound to act against anyone under her command alleged to be guilty of misconduct, and had immediately ordered an investigation.
Mdunge refused to provide the contact details of his lawyers, saying he had yet to meet them.
He said he was on holiday, “getting some fresh air”.
Asked why he had resigned, Mdunge said it was a coincidence. His last day would be at the end of the month.
“A lot of untrue rumours… have been spread about me before,” he said, referring to a 2009 story saying he had accepted a gift of a Mercedes from taxi owners.
“In the 27 years I have served in the police, I’ve worked… with commitment.” Mdunge said he had a law diploma from Unisa.
