Durban - Tabling an executive statement to the KZN legislature on Tuesday, KZN Transport MEC Willies Mchunu said he was “concerned” that people were sympathising with Sanele May, the driver of the truck that killed 23 people on Field’s Hill.

He said those who were supporting May, through petitions and Facebook, were condoning the killing of 23 people and were encouraging errant driving behaviour.

Mchunu also laid into the truck owner, Gregory Govender, who in a statement on Monday revealed that he had hired May three days before the fatal crash and that he had recently found out that May was using fraudulent driving documents.

“The responses I have seen so far from the owner of that truck, if they are true, they are insensitive.

“If somebody says to us that they employed a person from Swaziland and they discover after 23 people have been killed that the person had a fraudulent permit.

“If this is true then something was wrong in the employment practice from the beginning,” Mchunu said.

He said that if the investigation into the crash revealed that the owner broke any laws, he should be arrested and charged alongside May.
