|||Durban - A huge crowd gathered at a sports ground in Hammarsdale, KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday for the funeral of four people killed in a crash on Fields Hill in Pinetown.
A marquee on the grounds, about 50km from Durban, was packed with an estimated 2000 people, and it was still growing.
Among the mourners were several high profile dignitaries, including eThekwini mayor James Nxumalo, KwaZulu-Natal Agriculture MEC Meshack Radebe and the province's health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo.
Former provincial premier and current African National Congress treasurer general Zweli Mkhize also attended the funeral.
As the coffins of the four victims were wheeled into the marquee, family members began crying and consoling each other.
While mourners attended the funeral, scores of protesters gathered at the accident scene calling for a total ban on trucks using Fields Hill.
The protesters carried signs that read “How many more must die?” and “Value of 22 lives equals R350,000 saved in toll fees”.
Meanwhile, bikers held up traffic in protest against trucks using Fields Hill.
On September 5, 22 people were killed and many injured when an articulated truck rammed into four minibus taxis and two cars at the intersection of the M13 and Richmond Road. - Sapa
