Durban - Moments after pleading guilty to attacking Marklands Secondary pupil Zhane Abubakr, the two bullies allegedly mocked and laughed at the teenager and his grandfather.

On Monday, the two Grade 11 pupils appeared before an independent tribunal at Marklands Secondary in Shallcross.

Zhane also attended the hearing with his grandfather Bobby Moodley and uncle Vernon Moodley. He was not asked to testify in the presence of their parents.

Vernon Moodley said the tribunal had asked the pupils to explain what had happened.

Moodley said: “They wasted no time in admitting that they had attacked Zhane. They said they attacked him twice - on and off the school premises.”

The boys told the tribunal they had pleaded guilty in the hope of a lenient punishment, Zhane’s uncle said.

He said a report would be compiled with recommendations by the tribunal and submitted to the KZN Head of Education, Dr Nkosinathi Sishi, for a final decision on whether to suspend or expel the pupils.

Muzi Mahlambi, spokesman for the Department of Education, confirmed that Sishi would make the final decision.

Moodley said the boys had shown no remorse. “After pleading guilty to attacking my nephew they mocked and laughed at us. They were not sorry for what they did.”

Zhane said he had been concerned about coming face to face with his attackers for the first time after the incident.

“They laughed at me and were being disrespectful towards my family. But, it was cool seeing my friends again.”

The bullies, who are facing attempted murder charges, are expected to appear in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Last month, the pair assaulted Zhane and used a dangerous wrestling move - the tombstone piledriver which left him with fractured vertebrae in his neck.
