Durban - Two men are expected to appear in the Nongoma Magistrate's Court on Monday for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Colonel Vincent Mdunge said the men, both in their thirties, were arrested on Sunday after police received a tip-off about unlicensed firearms in the Esigubudu area.

Police recovered an AK47 assault rifle, two .303 rifles, a shot gun, and a 9mm pistol and ammunition.

Mdunge said the two men were believed to be linked to the murder of a 36-year-old man found dead with multiple gunshot wounds outside his home in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“The motive for his killing is unknown and a murder case was opened at Nongoma police station.”

Police were also trying to establish if the two men were linked to reported cases of armed robbery and murder in the Nongoma and surrounding areas, Mdunge said.

KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner Mamonnye Ngobeni encouraged residents to take a stand against illegal firearms and give police relevant information about those in possession of illegal firearms in the community.

Police in the province recently destroyed more than 17 000 illegal firearms. - Sapa
