Durban - Back at home and recovering from his “wrestling” injury, Zhane Abubakr is smiling.

“It’s so good to see him smiling, all his friends have been coming to see him, and he is laughing too, although his side pains when he does,” said his grandfather Bobby Moodley.

Zhane, a Marklands Secondary School Grade 11 pupil was severely assaulted by two bullies about three weeks ago.

His head was driven into the ground when the two pupils copied a dangerous wrestling manoeuvre, the “tombstone piledriver”.

The 18-year-old was put in an induced coma owing to the excruciating pain he was in, and underwent a successful operation last week which determined whether he would be able to walk again.

This week, he was able to take a few steps with the help of his family.

Moodley said his home had been inundated with visitors since his grandson’s return.

“Although he needs the rest, it is good that he is being kept alert and smiling, and talking to his friends and family who have been in and out of our home; he is in good spirits,” said Moodley.

Zhane will have to undergo more check-ups in the coming weeks.

“I decided to help change Zhane’s bandages myself,” said Moodley.

The tombstone piledriver effect was described to be so bad that a person could end up with a cracked skull, a broken neck or even die.

Zhane is unlikely to complete the rest of his school year, as he needs to recuperate at home.

The two pupils have been charged with attempted murder. They will appear in court next month. - Independent on Saturday
