Durban - Two dogs were pepper-sprayed and another was apparently beaten with a stick by burglars who made off with cash and jewellery from an Umbilo home on Wednesday.

Burglars forced open the motorised driveway gates and broke the burglar guards to gain entry into a bedroom. Inside they ripped the alarm off the wall and ransacked the cupboards.

The owners are mystified as to how the burglars bypassed their five dogs on the property in Cunningham Road.

Amanda Gibbon said she arrived home to find the driveway gate had been opened. She said her dogs did not look well.

“The room window was open and the burglar guard was forced inward,” she said.

“I had to wait for police to confirm there was nobody in the house. We found the alarm device lying on the couch.”

Her husband Dylan, an audio-visual engineer, believes there could have been more than three people involved. He suspected the dogs were distracted and kept away.

The couple have a Rottweiler named Alex, a Labrador ridgeback named Jethro and three Jack Russells – Kimmy, Micka and Sam.

“They sprayed Alex and Jethro with something to subdue them. Sam seems to be traumatised and may have been beaten with a stick,” Dylan said. “The dogs will be visiting the vet on Thursday.

“On any given day you would not get through into the yard because of Alex or the barking of the other dogs. For now it remains a mystery to us.”

Umbilo police are investigating a case of burglary.
