Durban - A magistrate has called on police to find out how two men came to be allegedly selling exam scripts at the side of the road.

Trevor Mthethwa, 27, and Sajib Ahmed, 26, both of Northdale, were arrested at the weekend after having been charged with stealing and selling exam scripts - (FET) N3 mathematics and mechanics examination papers - on the side of Greytown Road in Raisethorpe.

The papers were allegedly being sold at R800 each.

Mthethwa and Ahmed were remanded in custody until August 12. The case has been taken over by a provincial task team.

The pair are charged with corruption and illegally accepting a benefit.

Pietermaritzburg Magistrate Ashin Singh expressed his shock and disdain at the case brought before court on Monday. Singh said that he was baffled as to how the men had obtained the papers.

“This is a very serious offence. How can examination papers be stolen like this?”

Singh said it was imperative police find out where the suspects work and how they came into possession of the exam papers.

“These examination papers were being sold on the side of the road as if it were a flea market. In my opinion, this is one of the most serious crimes one can commit,” Singh said.

Prosecutor Miriam Aboobaker said another accused had agreed to turn State witness.

“Hopefully we will get to the bottom of this, and ensure this does not happen again,” said Singh.
