Durban - Police are offering a reward of up to R15 000 for any information that will lead to the arrest of an attacker involved in the murder three years ago of a Pietermaritzburg mother.

On the afternoon of October 8, 2010, 29-year old Nomcebo Happiness Mvelase was stabbed repeatedly in full view of her six-year-old son by an unknown man while walking in central Pietermaritzburg.

Investigations established that Mvelase and her son were walking in Cathedral Lane when they were approached by an unknown man.

The man produced a knife and stabbed Mvelase in the face and chest.

The attacker fled the scene.

The woman’s scared little boy ran to a nearby church and reported the incident to church members, who contacted the police. Mvelase died on the scene.

The motive for the attack is unknown.

Mvelase’s cellphone, gold chain, rings and handbag with R2 000 in cash were still in her possession.

Police have appealed to anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspects to contact the investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Thembinkosi Mthalane of the SAPS Pietermaritzburg Organised Crime Unit at 033 845 8502 or 082 556 1482.

Anyone wishing to supply information anonymously can call Crime Stop on the toll-free number 08600 10111.

Police said all information would be treated in strict confidence. Informants’ identities would not be disclosed.
