Three people suffered serious injuries when their car crashed into the roof of a house in Phoenix.
|||Durban - Three people suffered serious injuries when their car crashed into the roof of a house, destroying a Phoenix family’s peaceful slumber – and parts of their home.
The shocked Pillay family found that a car had crashed through their roof when the driver lost control as he was driving down a winding road.
The car and its occupants landed in the middle of the kitchen, missing a bedroom where people were sleeping by centimetres.
The incident happened at 2am on a hilly bend at Vistacroft Place. While all three occupants of the car were injured, the Pillay family escaped unharmed.
“There was a loud noise and my parents initially thought they were being robbed,” said Angie Reddy, 43. “They were screaming for help and neighbours pulled them out of the house. My mom and dad were treated for shock. My two sisters were unharmed.”
Ivin Govensamy, 58, whose son Nicholas, 21, was driving the vehicle, said the incident was sparked by an altercation.
“My son said he was standing outside the house when guys started an argument with him. To avoid an altercation he drove off with two female friends he was driving home.
“The guys followed him and a high-speed chase followed, and this is the result.
“He has serious back and head injuries and is in ICU. We are praying and hoping he makes it through.”
Neighbour Raj Moodley, 53, said he was one of the first on the scene. “I rushed into the house and had to crawl under the car to get to the other side. I found one of the passengers covered in rubble on the floor and the other dangling from the car. She wanted to move but I told her to hold on, help was coming,” he said.
The names of the two passengers are unknown.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinman described the rescue as “tricky”, saying the Fire Department had to assist.
Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said a case of reckless and negligent driving had been opened but no arrests had been made.
