Durban - AN eManzimtoti electrician underwent reconstructive surgery to his face last night after he fell off the roof of an eManzimtoti shopping centre parking lot.

Darlene Brenner said her son, Wayne, 23, had left a nightspot in Beach Road just before midnight on Sunday and usually used the rooftop of the three-storey parkade at Toti Mall as a short cut to their home in Bernadotte Street.

The road is the same level as the mall. Wayne Brenner fell after apparently miscalculating his landing.

The next morning, a worker at a nearby petrol station heard Brenner’s muffled calls for help, found the injured man and used his phone to contact the electrician’s boss.

Darlene said her son was found lying in a pool of blood.

She said they were still trying to establish what had caused him to fall off the rooftop.

“When I arrived, I thought he was dead. I managed to get him conscious and he uttered a few words to us. He could not recall what happened. He thought he had fallen off a ladder at work,” Darlene said.

“The only thing missing was one of his takkies. His wallet and cellphone were still on him. My son is lucky to be alive.”

Darlene said Wayne’s jaw and hip had taken most of the impact from the fall.

He fractured his left femur and sustained multiple facial fractures. All the bones in his face were broken, except his nose and forehead.

Brenner is recovering at the King Edward Vlll Hospital.

“We want closure on the incident. We believe he may have been assaulted or pushed off the rooftop. We have reported the matter to the police, but they did not open a case, saying there was no proof of a misdemeanour,” Darlene said.

“He came out of theatre last night. He was in a lot of pain. He would never be the same again. If there is someone out there who is involved, we can’t have them prey on another victim.”

Toti Mall manager, Kim van den Bergh, said the centre staff were also trying to find out what had happened.

Management had ordered the installation of additional perimeter security gates to avoid a repeat of the incident, she said.
