KZN's Community Safety MEC has expressed shock at the rape of an elderly woman, allegedly by her grandson and another teen.
|||Durban - KwaZulu-Natal Community Safety MEC Willies Mchunu expressed shock on Tuesday at the rape of an 80-year-old woman, allegedly by two teenagers, one of them her grandson.
“(This) raises serious questions about the degree and extent of the erosion of morals and lack of respect in our society,” Mchunu said in a statement.
He said society needed to undergo a serious soul-searching exercise and find the cause of such behaviour.
“I wonder what has driven our youth to such extremes?” Mchunu said.
The woman was resting in the bedroom of her Pietermaritzburg home on Monday when her 18-year-old neighbour allegedly raped her, Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said.
The youth and the woman's 15-year-old grandson had been watching television, but he disappeared when the younger boy went to make tea.
“It is alleged that he then went into his grandmother's bedroom and found the neighbour raping his grandmother,” Jeevan said. He called for help.
Neighbours assaulted the youth.
“During the assault, the suspect mentioned that he and the grandson previously raped the granny together,” said Jeevan.
Both were arrested and would appear soon in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court.
The youth was in a serious, but stable condition in a local hospital. The woman was receiving counselling. - Sapa
