|||Durban - A man was shot dead at a Newlands West home on Thursday during a burglary attempt.
According to sources, two men had broken a window and removed burglar bars from a home in Woodcastle Road.
A neighbour heard the noise and rushed to the home with his firearm.
One of the men saw him and fired shots at him. The neighbour returned fire, hitting one of the men. The second man jumped over the fence and fled.
Police found the dead man wearing gloves and a paint-stained overall.
Police spokesman, Colonel Jay Naicker, said an inquest docket had been opened at Newlands East police station.
“The shooting is being investigated. A firearm was seized by the police for investigation purposes.
“No arrest has been made at this stage, and a post-mortem will be conducted,” Naicker said.
