|||Newcastle - Three men are expected to appear in the Newcastle Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for the murder of a fisherman at Weir Dam.
The suspects, aged between 25 and 30, were arrested in Msinga yesterday. They were found driving the fisherman’s VW Polo. They are facing charges of murder and robbery.
Police spokesman, Captain Thulani Zwane said officers of the Pietermaritzburg organised crime unit - based in Newcastle - were conducting stop and search duties in Msinga when they noticed the VW Polo with Newcastle number plates.
Police did a registration check and found the car belonged to a Mr Khan in Newcastle. The family was contacted and it emerged that Afsar Khan, 31, had gone fishing at the dam on Monday.
He was last seen by his family on Sunday afternoon.
Police searched the area around the dam and Khan’s body was found 10m from the river bank. Zwane said Khan had sustained head injuries, believed to have been caused by a blunt object.
