Durban - A Bluff matric pupil has received a medal from the police for going to the aid of a young schoolboy stranded at a taxi rank.

Grade 12 Bluff Christian Academy pupil Mpilo Mhlongo was awarded the Brighton Beach Police Safer Communities medal and certificate for his kindness to the youngster.

Police spokesman Captain Louise Le Roux said Mhlongo, 18, noticed that a fellow pupil at his school, an eight-year-old boy, was standing alone at a taxi rank.

The boy, whose name was withheld by the school, told Mhlongo his transport had not arrived so he decided to walk to the taxi rank and board a taxi home. “Mhlongo contacted the boy’s mother who then made alternative arrangements for her son to be collected.

“Mhlongo decided that he was not going to let the boy wait by himself. He kept the boy company until his transport arrived at 6pm,” Roux said.

Mhlongo said he felt compelled to help.

“Police informed us about stranger danger, child trafficking and kidnapping. I was not going to let this happen to the boy,” the teenager said.

Principal Cheryl Ross said she was proud of Mhlongo.

Ross said Mhlongo had not mentioned his good deed and it only came to light a few days later when the eight-year-old told his teacher.
