Durban - Three people burnt to death when their car hit a Fidelity security vehicle on the N2 in Mtubatuba, KwaZulu-Natal transport MEC Willies Mchunu said on Sunday.

The three occupants of the Volkswagen Golf were burnt beyond recognition in the accident on Saturday night, the department said in a statement.

In a separate accident, eight people died when a minibus taxi travelling from Durban to Highflats collided with a truck on the R612 on Friday afternoon.

Six people died on the scene, the other two died later at Christ the King Hospital. The truck driver fled.

“It is believed that one driver disregarded traffic signs at the St Faiths intersection which resulted to the gruesome accident,” Mchunu said, but added that there would be a full investigation.

“It frightens me that more than 15 people were killed in our province in one weekend,” he said.

“This is unacceptable. I wish to send our condolences to those families who lost their loved ones.”

Mchunu said the accidents were an example of how people disregarded road rules.

“We have now endorsed drastic measures to ensure that those who are transgressing on the road are dealt with harshly.” - Sapa
