Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa has ordered police in KZN to come down hard on those responsible for politically motivated violence.
|||Durban - Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa has ordered police in KwaZulu-Natal to come down hard on those responsible for politically motivated killings and attacks, saying political instability would not be tolerated.
Mthethwa said people who attacked political opponents deserved to rot in jail, and he urged police to do all within their power to ensure that suspects were denied bail when the cases went to court.
In Estcourt at least five killings and nine attempted murder cases – believed to be linked to politics – have been recorded since August.
Community Safety MEC Willies Mchunu said despite various interventions, the violence-torn uMtshezi area and surrounding villages remained problematic.
Provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, said there had been progress on 14 cases with 12 suspects being arrested in connection with eight of those cases.
