Durban - A man has been arrested in connection with the shooting of three people, including a pregnant woman, at an Estcourt township.

The three were shot on April 23 while at a house in Wembezi’s C section by unknown men.

The woman, who was heavily pregnant, lost her baby and is in a serious condition in hospital.

Provincial police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said Pietermaritzburg’s Public Order Police, Crime Intelligence Unit and members of the Wembezi police station made a breakthrough on Friday when they received information that led to the arrest of a 40-year-old man in connection with the shooting.

Zwane said the two other alleged suspects had not yet been arrested.

“The firearm that was used during the shooting is believed to be with one of the outstanding suspects,” he said.

Police were following crucial leads which could lead them to the seizure of the firearm that was used during the attack, he said.

KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni has commended the swift arrest of the suspect and is confident that the outstanding suspects will be arrested soon.

Zwane said the arrested suspect was expected to appear in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court soon, and would be charged on three counts of attempted murder.

Police have not at this stage established the motive for the attack.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the two remaining suspects can contact the Wembezi police station or Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
