A senior policeman has been deployed to head the troubled Pinetown cluster.
|||Durban - In a move to halt the crime wave in Durban’s Outer West area, a senior policeman has been deployed to head the troubled Pinetown cluster.
KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni yesterday announced the appointment of Colonel Narayan Singh, commander of the Umlazi police cluster division.
She also revealed that a crack team consisting of 43 members of the Tactical Response Team, 15 Hawks detectives, and five crime intelligence officers would be deployed to tackle the recent spate of violent crime in Kloof, Hillcrest and Pinetown.
Ngobeni sent a strong warning to criminals and said “anarchy should not be tolerated”.
The team of officers, drawn from across the province, would target the Panga, Whoonga and Fingers gangs that have terrorised the area.
Ngobeni admitted there was a problem in the area and said police would root it out.
She called on residents to report crimes and to testify.
The team “has the skills to match these criminals”, she said.
Kloof Community Police Forum chairman, Corne Broodryk, called for cameras to be put up at roads leading into the area.
